"Memory" has always been the theme of my works, but as a foreign student, my understanding of "眷村" - the Military Dependents’ Village, is superficial. However, the scenes that I came across in the Heart Village constantly remind me of the places in the Kampong (Malay word meaning “village”) that I used to live in as a child, especially those of abandon houses of neighbours who had to move out due to the government’s new housing development plans. "Us" deliberately places images taken in the Heart Village alongside archive photos from the "Singapore Memory Project" website - an online platform for the sharing of people’s memory. In dealing with these two sets of images, I was amazed at the subtle visual resemblance between them. I hope that the spatial-temporal imagination brought forth by the visual juxtaposition would further engender thoughts about the similarities and differences between the two times and places. Although we may not have shared the same story, the pain and experience of losing places dear to us because of abrupt city development is our common memory.
